The Slate Truck is a no-frills electric vehicle expected to start at just under $27,500, with its price dropping to below $20,000 after applying the federal EV tax credit. An optional accessory package allows buyers to transform the minimalist truck into an SUV-like vehicle, adding versatility to its appeal.
Deliveries are slated to begin in late 2026, with production taking place at a repurposed facility in the U.S. Midwest. The base model is projected to offer an estimated range of around 150 miles on a single charge.
Slate, a young automaker, is betting heavily on the continued availability of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit—critical to bringing the effective cost of its 2027 electric truck down to under $20,000 for consumers. Even without the subsidy, the truck's sub-$27,500 price point makes it one of the most affordable EVs on the market.
Founded in 2022 as a project under Re:Build Manufacturing—a company launched by Jeff Wilke, former CEO of Amazon’s global consumer business, and Cannon Capital co-founder Miles Arnone—Slate quickly gained traction. By 2023, it had secured over $111 million in funding from 16 investors, including, reportedly, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The Slate Truck is a minimalist pickup designed with manufacturing simplicity and cost efficiency in mind. To meet these goals, Slate has stripped away most non-essential features. Aside from a digital gauge cluster—which also functions as a rearview camera display—power locks, cruise control, and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, there’s little in the way of creature comforts.
Standard features include roll-down windows and manually adjustable side mirrors. There’s no built-in audio or infotainment system either; instead, Slate encourages drivers to use their smartphones or tablets for navigation and entertainment. A phone dock is included, while a tablet mount is offered as an optional accessory. Just don’t expect any built-in speakers—unless you purchase them separately from Slate’s accessory division, your device's own speakers will have to do the job.
